The Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), the European Platform of Regulatory Authorities (EPRA) and the Association of European Journalists (AEJ) co-organised the final conference of the MEDIADEM project on ‘Media freedom and independence: Trends and challenges in Europe’. MEDIADEM researchers met in Brussels on 8 February 2013 for the final consortium meeting of the project. The meeting was organised and hosted by Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). It served to discuss the project’s progress in terms of research and dissemination activity and to assess the contribution of the project to science and policy, among others. More »
The University of Edinburgh held a workshop on 7 January 2013 on the future of the media in Scotland. The workshop considered the issues that arise from operating media in a devolved country, as well as possible consequences for the media should Scotland vote in favour of independence in the upcoming referendum in 2014. The School of Communication and Media organised an expert roundtable on media policy in Slovakia within the framework of the MEDIADEM project. The event took place at the SPK Centre in Bratislava, Slovakia, on 12 December 2012.
The aim of the roundtable, which was the 3rd one of this kind this year, was to foster discussion on the policy processes, tools and instruments supportive of the development of free and independent media in Slovakia. More »
On 10 December 2012, the Perelman Centre for Legal Philosophy and the Institute for European Studies (IEE) of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) organised a seminar to present and discuss policy suggestions for the promotion of free and independent media in Belgium. Participants included journalists, politicians, public officials, university professors, students, lawyers, legal counsels and representatives of media industry groups. More »
Finland has no real problems with the freedom of expression and media freedom. Instead, the future of these freedoms and the public trust of the media very much depend on the media’s own willingness and ability to produce high quality journalism and to maintain ethical responsibility. More »

On 5 December 2012 the Institute for International Relations (IMO) in Zagreb organised a workshop to present the progress of the MEDIADEM project, and to discuss European and Croatian policy issues that have a bearing on media freedom and independence. The list of participants included university professors, members of civil rights NGOs, members of professional journalists’ associations, representatives of the public service broadcaster, media advisers of the Croatian Ministry of Culture, and media market researchers.
