The University of Jyväskylä (JYU) originates from the first Finnish teacher training college, focuses on four main subjects: journalism, speech communication, organisational communication and PR, and intercultural communication.

Short profile of the team members

Heikki Kuutti, the scientist in charge for the research team of the University of Jyväskylä, is a Research Fellow in journalism at the Department of Communication, Faculty of Humanities. His doctoral thesis focused on investigative reporting. He has working experience as a journalist, teacher and researcher (University of Jyväskylä). He has also been Head of the information department of Finnish Air Force and President of Media Doc Ltd.

Epp Lauk is a Professor of Journalism at the University of Tartu and at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Her research activities focus on media development in Eastern and Central European new democracies, journalism culture and professionalisation of journalism in national and international perspectives, media literacy, journalism and censorship history and Estonian journalism history. She has taken part in several international research projects on the process of media transition and the impact of the Internet. Currently, she conducts the research project ‘Changing Journalism Cultures: A Comparative Perspective’ and ‘Actual Complexity of Cultural Communication and Methodological Challenges of Culture Research’. She was the Vice-Chairperson of the (original) Estonian Press Council in 2002–2004. Since 2005 she is the Chairperson. She has published more than 100 academic publications.


Marko Lindgren holds an MA in Journalism and German Philology from the University of Jyväskylä, where he also pursues doctoral studies at the department of Journalism. Over his career he has worked with a diverse set of media, both traditional and online.  The last 12 years he has been working on online services and software products in Nokia Corporation. His research interests include digital services, online media and consumer experience.
