The European University Institute in Florence held a workshop on 16 April 2010 on current trends in film law. The workshop addressed this issue both from a European as from a comparative legal perspective, and several MEDIADEM partners where represented therein (see programme). One of the main core arguments discussed in the seminar was related to the nature of films, asking whether they are cultural goods or, rather, industrial products. The consequences related to public policy options deriving from both conceptions where thus developed in detail. Further, media convergence was also a key element in the debates. New problems existing in this framework, such as the relationship between film production and broadcasters, or copyright issues, are inevitably to be taken into account when drafting an agenda for film public policies today. The papers presented at the workshop will be published in due course.
